Cllr Chris Hammond

Leader of Southampton City Council

Christopher Hammond is the current Leader of Southampton City Council and was elected to this role in May 2018.

He joined the Cabinet as porfolio holder for Transformation and then Sustainable Living.  Christopher chaired the Council’s Scrutiny Inquiry Panel in 2014, which explored the issue of and solutions to, Southampton’s air pollution problem.

Prof Patrick James

Professor of Energy & Buildings, University of Southampton

Prof James’ research is based on understanding energy use in the built environ-ment whether this is at home, at work or at a broader urban scale. He is a specialist in micro-generation technologies including solar thermal, photo-voltaics, micro-wind and micro-CHP. Current major research projects span Energy for Development , future urban environments and household energy use.

Keynote: Opportunities for Public Transport in Cities

Prof Nick Tyler, CBE

Director of UCL Centre for Transport Studies, University College London

Nick Tyler is the Director of the UCL Centre for Transport Studies and Chadwick Professor of Civil Engineering, and investigates the ways in which people interact with their immediate environments. He set up the Accessibility Research Group within the Centre for Transport Studies, with a team of researchers investigating many aspects of accessibility and public transport.

Prof Brian Collins, CB

Professor of Engineering Policy, University College London

Prof Collins served as specialist adviser to the House of Lords Science & Technolo-gy Committee’s inquiry into scientific infrastructure in 2013 and 2014. Before joining UCL, he served as Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) to two Government departments (Transport 2006-11; Business Innovation and Skills 2009-11), with responsibility for overseeing science, engineering and technological activities.

Andrew Waggott

Energy Service Manager, Portsmouth City Council

Andrew manages the team responsible for energy services at Portsmouth City and Gosport Borough Council. This includes energy efficiency and micro-generation capital projects, procurement and management of utilities and fuel poverty mitigation programmes.

Prof Rachel Cooper, OBE

Professor of Design Management & Policy, Lancaster University

Prof Cooper is Distinguished Professor of Design Management and Policy at Lan-caster University. She is Director of Imagination Lancaster, an open and exploratory design-led research centre conducting applied and theoretical research into people, products, places and their interactions, and also Chair of Lancaster institute for the Contemporary Arts.

Dr Alan Whitehead, MP

Shadow Minister of Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, UK

Dr Alan Whitehead has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Southampton Test since 1997. He has long been a champion for renewable energy sitting on a number of influential Select Committees relating to energy and the environment.
